Ka Moolelo o Hiiakaikapoliopele

The Epic Tale of Hiiakaikapoliopele

‘Akahi nö, for the first time ever, the epic tale of Hi‘iaka and Pele will be published in both Hawaiian and English. On the centennial of the original publication, Awaiaulu presents this legacy of narrative and chant in a limited edition.

The Hi‘iaka Story
This ancient saga begins with the goddess Pele’s migration to Kïlauea and her spirit’s search for a lover.  The story details the quest of Pele’s younger sister, Hi‘iakaikapoliopele, to find the handsome Lohi‘auipo and bring him back to their crater home. Graced with a magical skirt and wielding supernatural powers, Hi‘iaka and her companions make their dangerous journey, facing spectral foes and worldly wiles. A very human account of love and lust, jealousy and justice, peopled with deities, demons, chiefs, and commoners.

This version by Ho‘oulumähiehie, articulated with 375 chants, ran from 1905 to 1906 as a daily series in the Hawaiian-language newspaper Ka Na’i Aupuni. His captivating telling showcases his profound cultural knowledge and engaging style. The story highlights Hi‘iaka’s role as a healer, source of inspiration, and icon of the hula traditions that embody the chants and dances of Pele and Hi‘iaka. It is the most extensive version known, offering a wealth of detail about social and religious practices, poetry and hula, healing arts, and many other Hawaiian customs.

Text and Translation
Puakea Nogelmeier has reproduced the Hawaiian text in modern orthography and crafted an exacting English translation of the story and chants. While keeping to the literal content of the language for fullness and accuracy, the translation makes every effort to present the essence—the pacing, humor, and drama— of the original.

Illustrations
Hawaiian artist Solomon Enos has produced a suite of twenty-one original paintings inspired by this epic tale, illuminating selected portions of the story. The illustrations, one of which is included with this prospectus, are printed in full color in this Centennial Edition. Solomon Enos has also created portrait drawings of each main character—these are featured in Puakea Nogelmeier’s introduction.
